A Veterans Day
Message
from Governor Tom Vilsack and Lt. Governor Sally Pederson
November 11, 2002
We have always been impressed by the quiet grace and
humble dignity of America's veterans. The men and women of the United States
armed forces have defended freedom and defeated fear and oppression all over the
world. America's veterans have vanquished history's most murderous dictators,
have overcome the world's most vicious totalitarian governments, and fight on
still today in the global battle against terrorism.
America's veterans have answered the call to service,
not only to defend the immediate safety of our own homeland, but also to
preserve and advance noble ideas for the good of all humankind. America's
veterans have fought for the idea that individual people have a right to shape
their own destiny and pursue their own happiness. America's veterans have fought
for the idea that human life is worth defending against the cruel ambitions of
brutal tyrants and the empty promises of repressive ideologies. America's
veterans have fought so that no human being should have to live in fear.
Today we honor the memory of those who have died, we
salute those veterans who are still living, and we reaffirm our dedication to
the noble ideas they served to defend.
We wish you all a safe and peaceful Veterans Day.
Sincerely,
Tom Vilsack, Governor
Sally Pederson, Lt.
