Facing what Maj. Gen. Michael Rochelle, U.S. Army Recruiting Command head, calls "the toughest recruiting climate ever faced by the all-volunteer Army," a new 15 months active-duty service option has been added to the recruitment menu.

The Army has been all-volunteer since the draft was abolished in 1973, but images of death and destruction coming out of Iraq have slowed Army enlistments to a crawl.

After completing 15 months on active duty after completing their training and two years in the Army Reserve or National Guard, Soldiers in this new option would be required to spend seven years in the Individual Ready Reserve.

The 15-month enlistment program was implemented in Columbia, South Carolina; Miami; Raleigh, North Carolina, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Ohio; Kansas City, Missouri; Sacramento, California; Albany, New York; Mission Viejo, California, and San Antonio, Texas.
