SACRAMENTO—More than two-thirds of California's fifth, seventh and ninth graders are out of shape, according to new test results from the state.

Students are tested in six areas: cardiovascular endurance; percentage of body fat; abdominal strength and endurance; trunk strength and flexibility; upper body strength and endurance; and overall flexibility.

The state Department of Education says there's been minimal improvements in student fitness over the last three years.

Despite the poor overall performance, there was one bright spot. Sixty percent of students passed the most important test of fitness: cardiovascular endurance.
