Friedrich Ludwig Jahn awakened a physical culture movement in early 19th Century Germany that still influences modern physical education. Much of the wisdom that arose from his early efforts is lost but can be found in the study of history. The movement he inspired became known as the Turnvereine. You can find more on the subject at these sites: Physical Educators from the Davenport School District assembled this month at West High School for a three-hour in-service with a fitness emphasis. A team of West High students trained with and presented a series of physical training drills. Thanks to the District Physical Education Coordinator Chelle Mannhardt, Coach Paul Flynn, and the staff at West High for organizing a great training session. Special thanks to retired Coach Fred Freidrickson and Ruth Johnson for coming over. Davenport's Assistant Athletic Director Randy Schrader was also there. Thanks also to Ken Daley, Editor of the IAHPERD Journal and Joe McGillicuddy, Health and Wellness Facilitator for the Cedar Rapids School District, for attending. Conditioning Drill #1 for boys and Dumbbell Drill #1 for girls and boys are a great start for fitness training. These two drills are appropriate for most Jr. High - High School students. Quality must always precede quantity. The drills are not to be repeated mindlessly. Each training session must be learning process with students moving closer to perfection. Attention to detail is a must. A limited number of instructional videos are available to teachers and youth leaders at no cost. For information concerning videos and good sources for dumbbells, contact Dr. Ed Thomas.
Physical educators and students from Roland-Story schools are thinking fitness. Training this month included conditioning drills, medicine balls and club swinging. Roland-Story will also take the lead on mastering the agility ladder. Drive on Roland-Story! |
