1905 Turnfest in Indianpolis, Indiana
The German immigrants who settled throughout the Midwest in the mid-1800's brought a highly sophisticated system
of physical training. Much of the wisdom of that system has been
forgotten, but some leaders in the physical training arena are becoming increasingly
interested in the past. The Turners published a journal called Mind and
Body. Here is a glimpse of its tone and content.

The fact that numerous works
on preventive medicine, hygiene, exercise, physical culture, gymnastics, athletics,
etc., are already in existence proves the importance of these and similar
subjects, and the proper development of the body and the mind seems to be universally
recognized as the main necessity for the building up of better and
healthier human beings, so that with better and stronger individuals a
stronger society and nation may be formed.
