World War II brought renewed interest in physical fitness, and cities like Davenport were fortunate to have a strong tradition of German physical culture. New leadership in the Army's Training and Doctrine Command is taking on the challenge, but little if any good will come of tougher physical training. The current physical readiness training doctrine is without logic and many more soldiers will be injured or killed if we intensify it. The Army needs smarter physical training, and we owe it to our soldiers to demand nothing less.
