These images help tell the Turnvereine story across time.  Can you estimate the years in which the photos were taken?

The new administration is now preparing to retool education.
We can predict that all efforts will fall short as the motor and affective domains
are forced to carry an increasingly bloated cognitive component.

8-18 year olds are increasingly inert.
Details here.

And here.

Federal PEP Grants continue spending $millions on "Lifelong Physical Activity."

The emphasis on lifetime physical activities at the expense of effective and progressive physical/motor skill development
can be traced back to the early-1920s.  It was called the "New Physical Education."
In recent years, enormous amounts of Federal funding has been aimed at changing the "physical activities"
from sports/games to "cup stacking," "wall climbing," and other "lifetime activities."

Charles H. McCloy fought hard for reform in the 1930's - 50's.
He was one of the primary architects of the 1945 Iowa high school physical education doctrine.
His vision did not endure.

"The high schools have usually failed to face reality as to the their contributions to possible future adult physical education and recreation.
They have generally assumed that if the major emphasis in high school physical education was on individual and team sports,
such as tennis, golf, badminton, archery, volleyball and softball,
training in these sports would carry over into good and adequate after-school habits of recreation and exercise.
All of the surveys have shown that this supposition is not true."

The body building community called for reform in response to the Kraus-Weber Test
and President Kennedy's vision for fitness-based physical education in the early-1960's, but relatively few schools responded.

In the last fifteen years, increasingly more physical educators are aiming their
programs toward the physical/motor fitness of children.
One of them in Tennessee recently sent this historical document.

An IHPRA reader recently sent these images.
Thanks Julian.

Hello IHPRA:  Seems like people are more interested these days in the way the Greeks trained.
Have you done much study about it?  Thanks for the cool newsletters.

Men Who Stare at Goats

Dr. Thomas -- A buddy in my unit read that you were a member of LTC Jim Channon's Task Force Delta.
Is that true?  SFC W.

Jim Channon

Many years ago SFC.  Dates are fuzzy.  Signed on in around 1980.
Have only a couple documents left.  Listed on the 1982 roster.
My Task Force Delta role was insignificant.  A silent observer at best.
Interesting experience.

I saw some of your information about Indian clubs
and bought a pair of old 2 pound clubs at an antique store in Madison.
Thanks for the information.  How do I use them?

Carefully.
