Twenty-four members of the Iowa Army
National Guard recently became Physical Readiness Training Leaders after
successfully completing the IARNG's first PRTL Course held at Camp Dodge, Iowa
on 14-17 January 2002. Soldiers spent ten hours a day studying physical
training principles and techniques that can apply to youth as well as
adults.
Across the State of Iowa, Guard personnel
and high school physical educators are joining forces to impact on the health
and physical readiness of our youth. The IARNG PRTL course is designed to
prepare leaders for unit PRT leadership and youth programs.
Students were introduced to a variety of
skills including posture enhancement, conditioning drills, dumbbell drills,
medicine ball drills, and numerous other ways to restore body alignment and optimal
function.
Strength and conditioning expert Steve
Myrland began the course with a full day of instruction in cutting-edge
functional fitness concepts. Steve taught med ball training, agility
drills, cable work, and numerous other balance, power, speed, and agility skills.
Five-time World Ultimate Fighting
Champion Pat Miletich made the last day of the course as interesting and
challenging as the first. Students covered hand, elbow and knee attacks in
the morning, and went to the ground for an afternoon of takedowns, chokes arm
locks, leg locks, and a variety of ground control methods.

IARNG Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations,
COL Michael Beaman awarded certificates during the graduation ceremony at the
IARNG Armory at Camp Dodge. Hats off to the IARNG for developing a world-class physical readiness training leader
course.
