Politicians and athletes unveil "New Program" to fight obesity

Editorial

Given the steady decline of physical culture for several generations, we should all be skeptical when politicians and athletes join forces to endorse a "New Program"  designed to improve physical education.

The usual athletes including Billie Jean King and Herschel Walker are among those who have "unveiled" a new program to fight childhood obesity.

The three-part initiative is linked to PE-4 Life, which has emerged out of the physical education profession, which has a long tradition of producing unfit teachers who have traditionally been much more interested in sports and games than they are with getting kids fit.

If unveiling this "New Program" eventually means sinking millions of our dollars into another ill-conceived initiative, we should not be surprised to wake up a few years from now poorer and just as unfit.
